My 2012 final tally: 57 books. Last year, I had the best reading year of my life. Taking the 50 Book Pledge wasn’t just about finding the time to read but reading widely. I read everything from fiction to non-fiction, classics to poetry, young adult novels to graphic novels. I read books that I’ve always wanted to read — Frankenstein, Dracula and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes — but for one reason or another had never gotten around to. When it came time to take the pledge again I was [...]

"Private stories, our own essential stories, the stories we tell ourselves and others to structure our personal histories and explain who we are, are another matter. These stories, when they take a wrong turn, can leave us terrifyingly alone and expose us to humiliation or worse. They are central to our identity, and if they fail us we may fall apart. Paul Auster, the American novelist, puts it succinctly. "We construct a narrative for ourselves," he says, "and that's the thread we follow from o [...]

Not only was he off in so many ways on his analysis of French theorists and critical theory, the whole book is pretty bland. Narrative is a matter of cultural production?! Really? Big revelation!! Not like Jameson didn't point this out 20 years ago, or Barthes a few decades before that, or Benjamin a few decades before that, orSmarter, more open-minded men have made this point in books with much more interesting things to say. I give it one star, accompanied by five full yawns.

I am not impressed with the CBC Lecture series. I have not read every book in the series, but those I have all try so hard to be smart and inventive (they try too hard). They have a pretentious tone and end up either totally failing to be interesting or they just make semi interesting points but thrash around in a frantic manner. This book, while falling into the latter category and being by no means impressive, is however, a bit more interesting than its companions.

Five lectures on all types of narrative, that are insightful and enjoyable. Fulford is a true lover of story telling and he touches the hearts of all such lovers by his intimate talks. By the way, CBC Massey Lectures, a real treasure which has been accumulating since 1961, are now available on the web, free of charge:cbc/ideas/masseys/

Brings nothing really new to the table. If you want a better CBC lecture book check out Thomas King's "The Truth About Stories"

"Narrative gives us a way to feel empathy for others. But can make us smug by persuading us that we understand more than we actually do."
